Punishing Pregnant Women

The New York Times LTE posted the story “Punishing Pregnant Women“.

As a physician who cares for pregnant patients, I know firsthand that I do not need lawmakers dictating the care I provide to my patients.

The Tennessee Legislature’s bill to prosecute mothers if their newborns test positive for illegal narcotics is a prime example of needless political interference. It would turn physicians into police officers, and discourage patients who use drugs from visiting a physician at a time when they desperately need prenatal care.
